My Year With English

Hey guys!
Now that you know a little more about me, I would like to tell you about my year with English.
This year we have worked with four different topics and all of them were very exciting; and that’s exactly why I would like to share them with you! 👍🏼

The first topic we had was “Entering the world of fantasy”. The topic offered different stories such as ”The lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and “Alice in Wonderland - part 1” which both were about getting into another world, an imaginary world, with supernatural animals and magic. Besides that, we have also worked with the movie ”Stardust” which was about a boy who promised his beloved that he would retrieve a fallen star after passing the magical wall. But the star was not a usual meteorite - it was a beautiful woman. During the movie, we learned a lot about the development of characters, but we also learned how to analyze the genre in general. We also learned how to write a story with these specific genre features. 💫

The second topic we worked with was “A nation divided”, where we also included talking about the English history. Here we learned about the Constitution of the United States and all its amendments, but we also learned about the segregation between the white people and the black people in America. To illustrate how hard this segregation was to the black people, we saw the movie “The Butler” which gave a glimpse of the main character Cecil Gaines’ life and his problems with his family and work and getting the two things to cooperate. All of this happened, during the civil rights movement which Gaines’ son was a part of. 👱🏿✊🏿

The third topic was the book ”The Curious incident of the Dog in the Nighttime” by Mark Haddon. The book showed us the life with a disability though the fictive character, Christopher Boone, and his way to discover and handle difficult situations, mostly situations with lies and prohibitions involved - but also his mother’s fake death and his dad’s temper. I think the book wants to tell us that even when everything in life goes against you, you can still be able to handle it if you want to. Though the book, we have learned how to analyze sequences of a book, but we have also learned how to compare a book to a movie by seeing the movie “Rainman”. ☔️

The fourth topic, and the last this year, is “Ireland and the Irish - Part 1” which is the topic we work with in class right now. Here we learn about what it’s like to live in Ireland, but also what makes people emigrate and immigrate from and to Ireland and how Ireland can get the emigrants back, just like we hear in the article “Dear New Dáil” by Vanessa Monaghan. We have also watched some clips on youtube about the immigration, where we learn the Irish accent as a kind help before our upcoming study trip to Dublin in 3.G. 🇮🇪
