My study
trip to Dublin
My
study trip to Dublin was crazy. It only lasted for 5 days, but Dublin (and
Ireland in general) gave me so many impressions. First thing I noticed was the
Irish people. We had only been in Dublin for 20 minutes or so, when a complete
stranger (a woman) came up to us and cursed at us while spitting at some of us.
She was so awful to us, and to be honest I must say that the Irish people
didn’t seem so violent at first, so it came as a surprise to me because she
knew we were tourists.
And
that wasn’t all of it - I saw so many homeless people who either was really
drunk or who took/sniffed different kind of drugs such as lighter gas and weed.
But
then I also have to mention the Irish people that surprised me in a good way.
Almost everywhere I went, Irish people said “sorry” and “excuse me” more often
than we did (and do) - even when they nearly just grazed us, a sorry came your
way. It also made me think that the Danish society opposite the Irish society
is really selfish and egocentric. In Denmark it’s always everyone else’s fault
and not your own. Most of the Irish people also showed their interest when we
had to interview them for our school project, which again made me very
surprised. It’s not often people have the time to help each other out in
Denmark, and this just showed me that the Irish people is very open-minded and
helpful - which we of course can learn from.
As
you can see, I met a ton of different people, which also gave me the impression
that the nation wasn’t at its best but was a nation with flaws just like
Denmark and every other country.
With
all these things considered, I must say the trip to Dublin was spectacular.
People around us showed their sympathy and talked slowly, when we found it
difficult to understand, which was really nice of them. But I must say I am
impressed.
Hi Søs,
SvarSletI like the way you have chosen to focus on your impression of the Irish people and all the different experiences you have had talking to some of them, bumping into others, and being insulted by a random crazy woman in the street :)
This makes your blog post very personal an interesting to read. Well done
